Proofreading

Tape & Manuscript Transcription
Proofreading (light editing):
Proofreading is the best option when you're sure your writing is in good shape,
but you need an expert pair of eyes to catch typos and other mistakes you might
have missed.

A proofreader checks for errors in
capitalization, punctuation, spelling,
subject-verb agreement and word usage as well as for typos and
inconsistencies in format* and style.*

*Format relates to font type and size and the style of outline numbering, page numbering,
headings and subheadings.  Style is a specific guideline followed in making choices not
affecting grammar.  For example,
The Associated Press Stylebook calls for spelling out
numbers one through nine and using numerals beginning with 10.
Copy Editing (medium editing):
Copy editing is the best option when your ideas and organization are strong, but
you are less sure of yourself when it comes to the mechanics of the English
language.

A copy editor checks for the same errors as the proofreader and checks your
document for
redundancies, transitions between paragraphs, awkward
phrasing and grammatical errors.  The copy editor makes note of any obvious
factual errors.

In fiction, copy editing also involves checking for obvious storyline inconsistencies
― for example, if you mix up the names of two characters.
Content Editing (heavy editing):
Content editing is the best option when your ideas are good, but you struggle
with organization, wordiness or clarity as well as English grammar and other
language mechanics.

A content editor helps a writer with general
organization, clarity, coherence
and
conciseness as well as all of the services of proofreading and copy editing.

Content editing takes two to three editing passes.  A content editor often makes
suggestions regarding content and how to improve the author's writing but does
not make significant changes without input from the author.

Content editing can be helpful to those whose strengths are in other disciplines as
well as to those with learning disabilities and to those relatively new to the English
language.
Fact Checking (via phone, the Internet, etc.):
Áccent on Words makes the assumption that writers have done their homework
and that the facts presented in their writing are correct.

A fact checker reads through your document and
verifies the authenticity of
specific facts by
checking information on the Internet, by speaking directly to
sources (by phone) or by checking a written source, such as an atlas,
encyclopedia, dictionary or style manual.

If you do need someone to
check facts in your document, this service needs to
be ordered in addition to the editing service you have requested.

Fact checking can also be ordered separately.
Document Formatting (in Word Perfect or Microsoft Word):
Áccent on Words can take a document you've typed  and format it so that it has
consistent fonts, headings, subheadings, page numbering or outline
numbering
.

If you have specific guidelines to follow for your project, such as for a dissertation,
master's thesis, book manuscript or self-published book, we can use your
guidelines and format your document accordingly.

We can also scan and insert photographs into your document and format captions
for them.

Currently, we are equipped to
format documents in Word Perfect 9 (or earlier
versions of Word Perfect) or Microsoft Word 10 (or earlier versions of Microsoft
Word.)
Transcription (from mini-tape, standard-size cassette or legible manuscript):
We can transcribe your legible handwritten or typewritten manuscript into
Word Perfect or Microsoft Word.

We now accept digital audio files in a variety of formats as well as
transcription saved to
CD. We also transcribe from taped conversations,
interviews or dictation on
mini-cassette or standard-size cassette, including
various legal documents and pleadings.

Money-saving tips: The better the sound quality of your tape, the faster the transcriber can type,
which saves you money. The best sound quality is obtained when recording at regular speed.
Sound quality is diminished at half speed; therefore, it is more cost effective to use extra
cassettes at regular speed.

For the best sound quality: If possible, stay indoors. Place the recorder equidistant between
parties, t
ry to have all parties face the recorder and eliminate sounds that distract from voices,
such as open doors or windows, air conditioners, children or pets. Remind all parties to speak
loudly and clearly and to refrain from crosstalk. It is best to put the recorder closer to someone
with a non-American accent. Remind telephone parties to speak clearly and directly into the
handset. In interviews and direct dictation, spell names, place names and any unusual words
at first mention.

IT'S FINALLY HERE!

Digital Transcription

Record your files on a
digital recorder and e-mail
them. Receive your
transcribed document
by e-mail without hiring a
messenger service or
paying extra for pick up
and delivery of audio tapes.
REMEMBER:  Even the best and most experienced writers need and use editors!
